“Enough of bloodshed,” Zambo Interfaith conference says

DAVAO CITY — “Enough of the bloodshed! End the military operations

on civilian communities in Mindanao! Resume the peace talks and stop labelling

both Moro and Filipino rebels as terrorits.”

These are the demands of 120 religious peace advocates in the three-day Muslim-Christian

Interfaith Conference which ends Thursday. The conference theme is “Building

Bridges, Healing the Wounds of the Crusades, Promoting a Just and Lasting Peace

in the Second Front' of the War on Terrorism.”

Religious Investors, Advocacy Groups Issue First Global 'Bench Marks' for Corporate Behavior

Corporations around the globe for the first time now face the prospect of uniform

standards and expectations from religious groups, other concerned investors

and advocacy groups on a comprehensive range of issues, including sweatshop

labor, pollution control, and access to afordable pharmaceuticals, including

HIV/AIDS medications. Ten years in the making and released for the first time

today [5/20/2003], “Principles for Global Corporate Responsibility: Bench

Marks for Measuring Business Performance” is the work of a diverse global

coalition of religious organizations and advocacy groups.

Condemn Anti-Islam Remarks

Leading evangelical Christians for the first time have publicly condemned assaults on Islam by the Rev. Franklin Graham and other fellow religious conservaties and pledged to heal rifts with Mulsims that threaten missionary work overseas.

Meeting Recommends Strong Inter-Religious Ties On AIDS

The Nairobi consultation on HIV/AIDS partnerships recommended strengthening

of inter-religious collaboration in response to the scourge. This, delegates

stressed, should be carried out at country level.

Faith-based organisations (FBOs), the conference further recommended, should

identify representatives to sit on Country Co-ordinating Mechanisms (CCMs) and

other national bodies related to HIV/AIDS.

This, the delegates pointed out, would strengthen their representation within

a broader network at country level. They further recommended that FBOs should

promote participation of People Living With AIDS (PLWAs), women and youth, in

all aspects of decision-making, planning and implementation of HIV/AIDS responses.

To the consultation co-sponsors (WCC, WCRP and Caritas Internationalis), delegates

recommended promotion of greater communication and information sharing within

and across networks.

More than 400 people turned out for the Seventh Annual AIDS Walk Charlotte

Saturday morning [5/3/2003]. The Regional AIDS Interfaith Network sponsored

the event. It is the largest AIDS awareness event in the region.

Interfaith-Based Approach Effective in Fight Against AIDS

Religious organisations in Zimbabwe have joined the Government, non-governmental

organisations in fighting the AIDS scourge, which is decimating large sections

of society.
