There are essentially two ways that people the world over can take action to help end the genocide and suffering in Darfur:
- push for greater international attention through the U.N. Security Council (i.e. providing more peacekeepers, no-fly zone, sanctions, etc.), and
- Support the work of relief agencies on the ground.
Security Council (S.C.)
- Americans wishing to make a difference should support swift passage of the Darfur Accountability Act in the U.S. Senate and ask their Senators to support the notion of holding trials for crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court. Contact your Senators today.
- Individuals in other nations —particularly those with representation on the Security Council —can likewise contact their government officials to demand that they work toward passage of stronger S.C. actions in Sudan
Humanitarian Relief
There are many organizations on the ground providing relief aid to refugees in Sudan and Chad. The Save Darfur Coalition and InterAction.org both have excellent (and distinct) lists of organizations accepting donations for work in Sudan.
It is critically important that the situation in the south not be forgotten, where a long civil ware is now in a still-tenuous cease fire. There is much rebuilding to be done there. When evaluating organizations to support, we suggest that you work with agencies committed to reconstruction and refugee aid throughout Sudan.
Of special note is the Southern Sudan Education project, sponsored by the Whale Center (whose Director is a member of this action group).
